Harvard astrophysicist: Sunspot activity
correlates to global climate change

Published April 11, 2009

Boston (MA) - Harvard astrophysicist Dr. Willie Soon tells us that Earth has seen a reduced level of sunspot activity for the past 18 months, and is currently at the lowest levels seen in almost a century. Dr. Soon says "The sun is just slightly dimmer and has been for about the last 18 months. And that is because there are very few sunspots." He says when the sun has less sunspots, it gives off less energy, and the Earth tends to cool. He notes 2008 was a cold year for this very reason, and that 2009 may be cold for the same.

COMMENTS:

Clearly this scientist is a bright guy, and adheres to 'scientific method'. He quotes facts as he knows them, and highlights some theories that may be correct and connected. Smartly, Dr. Soon doesn't say these theories MUST be true, unlike many of those on the fund-grabbing bandwagon!
Happily, as a non-scientist, I can take the risk of stating that I think common sense says he is on the right track. Man's energy input in to the climate is truly puny compared to the sun - the real driver. A minor variation in the sun's heating of the Earth will have a vastly larger impact than Man can currently hope to achieve, and we also are mostly ignorant of the processes going on around us.
I hope the press and the global public start to listen to peole like Dr. Soon. With luck, we can then stop worrying about climate change, and concentrate on real issues such as pollution and poverty.
