I am writing you as a very concerned resident of Boulder County Colorado. As you may know, Boulder, Colorado is well known for its eclectic, left leaning, politics which have resulted in numerous rules and regulations that continue to infringe upon basic individual rights. The latest proposal by our County Commissioners has finally prompted me to write to you and others seeking any possible help you may provide.
As the attached article will show and in the interests of brevity, Boulder County is looking to have absolute and final say over the type and size of any home built (the article highlights 20,000+ square foot homes but the regulations will effect any proposed home over 5,500 square feet including basements and garages). While they use wording such as sustainability, environmental efficiency, deconstruction and on, the bottom line is they will (and have been) employ arbitrary and personally subjective reasoning to tell private property owners the type and size of house they may live in. Though I am not an expert on constitutional law or even individual rights, to my eye this is a triumph of collectivism over individualism and basic property rights. I am reminded of F.A. Hayek’s work, The Road to Serfdom.
As a small business owner who also recently completed building a home in Boulder County, I have witnessed first hand how intrusive and costly our local government has become. It is not an exaggeration to state that socialistic values are dominating our political leaders in Boulder. My problem is I simply do not have the time or resources to fight these regulations and am looking to organizations and people such as you to spread the word and provide assistance, expertise, discourse, etc. to those here in Boulder who care deeply about the direction our local government is going and the depth to which they seemingly will not stop.
