S T O R I E S

In Shear Time
By Becki Zanardi / Nebraska

I know people think we're crazy to shear in December and January. We shear pre-lambing for several reasons: The ewes rarely drop a lamb outside the barn, the barn stays drier as less moisture is brought in w/wool, less moisture can also mean the barn stays cleaner, and the lambs will find the teat instead of a piece of wool to nurse. The first pic is my brother Kurt shearing a ewe lamb on the stand (The second picture is my husband Darren.).

Kurt does the ewe lambs on the stand and the older ewes on the ground. He went to shearing school back in college and can get through a ewe in less about 5 minutes. (He said his record was around 3. Ha! Today there were several 10 minute ones, I'm pretty sure. :) As our flock grows, he said he's NOT doing the shearing after this year except fitting the show lambs and breeding stock for shows. It is SO hard on the back!
