Washington, D.C. U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) announced today the confirmation of Lyle Laverty, of Colorado, to be the new Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife at the Department of Interior.

Throughout his distinguished career Mr. Laverty has consistently displayed exceptional leadership and a commitment to our nations lands, said Allard. I have had the opportunity to see Lyles good work up close in my home state of Colorado. I have great confidence in his abilities and I can think of no one better suited to fill the role of Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife than Mr. Laverty.

Lyle Laverty served as the Director of Colorado State Parks since 2001. Under his leadership, Coloradoopened several new state parks, increased park visitation, reduced the threat of wildfire on state lands, and improved park conditions.

Before his service in Colorado, Mr. Laverty displayed a high degree of dedication and leadership with 35 impressive years of work at the U.S. Forest Service.During this time he rose through the ranks to become Associate Deputy Chief of the Forest Service where he helped implement the National Fire Plan.

I worked with Lyle while he was Regional Forester and while he was Director of Colorado State Parks.  I agree with Jack that Lyle has a fine record in conservation.  In addition, he has shown great courage as a public servant demonstrating time and again that he is willing to take political and career risks in order to do the right things for wildlife, water quality, and recreation.  Jack, thanks for your comments.
Best to all.

I worked closely with Lyle Laverty for several years in the Washington Office of the Forest Service. I promoted him several times when I was Chief of the Forest Service. He is a fine professional with a fine record in conservation work across a number of assignments in both federal and state service.

I'll put in my two cents worth for what it's worth (probably about that).  I met and know Lyle personally mainly from our Rotary hikes along the trail.  In my mind this guy is a hero.  Thank God he was with us when our leader conked
out and couldn't move when we were hit by heavy rain and lightening over a major pass in the Colorado Rockies.  I got soaked and, though I was willing, was pretty helpless.  Lyle carried on his back our leader, down a trail that
had become a stream while lightening struck all around us.  If Lyle hadn't been with us we might still be there.  I know that evidence of such remarkable character doesn't prove he will be a success in his new job, but that is where I would put my money.  He has been a great supporter of the Trail and of the whole idea of it.  Character counts.
Best Regards to you all,

I have know Lyle for a long time and he is a thoughtful manager for whom I have a high degree of respect.  The
garbage in the papers at the time of his nomination is just that -- typical garbage that you see at the time of a nomination. The proof is in his confirmation - he faced no real opposition because he has a strong record of working collaboratively on conservation issues.

I feel a little like Mark Twain when he said “the report of my death was an exaggeration”.  Like the report of his passing, the news release of my confirmation was just a bit premature.  Unfortunately, the Senate did not move on my nomination Friday before they left.  I talked with Secretary Kempthorne yesterday and it “appears” that the Senate  will move on the nomination next week when they return from recess.
I’ll keep you posted!
Greetings to Chuck!
