Stop Plum Island Research Move Today!

Here is what we know about a prospective "Plum Island Research" facility move - from Plum Island to Kansas - midland U.S.A.

We were told the cost would be 450 million; today it hasn't even started, and the cost has already balloned to nearly 700 million.

We are told we need a new facility because the Plum Island Research facility needs repairs.

We are told that FMD would be better studied in the heartland and beltway of beef in the United States; wher,e within 5 hours, a majority of all cattle fed in the United States are fed or raised.

We are told to forget the Humbolt Fault line and past earthquakes in Kansas (Tuttle Creek Reservior sits near that fault line and has flooded in the past).

We are told to believe that a tornado will not cause problems - and some even feel it "could" handle an F5; even though two years ago a tornado caused devastion in Manhattan, Ks.

We are told that people working in the facility will create no risk to the outside environment - or to cloven hoofed animals outside this "newly constructed facility" (Researchers at Plum Island take great care in avoiding contact after working there.).

Then we are told "we are creating jobs." What are the scientists now working in the Plum Island facility going to do? Pump gas on the east coast for less money?

Entry into and out of the damage area is a whole different matter. No entry or exiting! All travels are shutdown and stopped. Having attended a Foreign Animal Disease Training I can assure you that YOU DO NOT WANT Foot and Mouth Disease in America! A scenerio by a University showed that within a very short time it could cover almost every state in the Union

So I ask you: If you believe the rhetoric and beliefs of Plum Island move supporters (those financed to push this move), you might support it. But, the facts are contraire to the financially motivated beliefs of these promoters.

This is a fravely serious project that - unless stopped today - may further because of the lax importation and immigration laws and threats from abroad.

Whether you live in the country or the city, you have multiple reasons to stop this project in its tracks.
Please call your congressional members and tell them to protect you and your food supply by leaving the Plum Island Research facility where it is!

Thank you for your help,
Mike Schultz
